Bouldering in Vermont

North Duxbury, Vermont

Vermont local, Roger Klinger, has provided us with some excellent topos for a new bouldering area he and his crew have uncovered in North Duxbury, Vermont. Click here to check out the info.

Triple Buckets, Jonesville

This area is located in the town of Jonesville, and has river side bouldering and swimming holes. Currently, only one boulder has been developed and has seven problems from V0 to V5/6. The holds on this boulder consist of sloping pockets that have been sculpted by the river. There are many other boulders along the river waiting to be developed, including one house sized boulder with a cool overhanging face. Take Route 2 East from Richmond to Jonesville. About 0.6 miles after the "Welcome to Jonesville" sign, make a right onto Cochran Road. After another 0.5 miles make a left onto Dugway Road. Go about 1.2 miles on Dugway and you'll see a gate on your left. Park on the left just after the gate, and take the trail from the gate to the river. If you reach triple buckets proper, you'll have gone too far for the established boulder. E-mail Colin for more details.

Eli Worley had this to say about this area: "The boulder at Triple Buckets its by no means worth a trip to climb. I have known about this boulder for quite sometime and it is for sure a cool boulder with one stellar problem. But, you would be hard pressed to find a climber who would skip the swimming to boulder. I would change the write up to say that this is the perfect post -climbing day swim area with a fun boulder near by. The gorge is only 5 minutes from bolton climbing and 25 minutes from Smuggler's Notch. Please be careful 24+ people have died at the gorge, the majority of which were under 25."

Smuggler's Notch

There is a guidebook for bouldering in Smuggler's Notch. The guidebook listed quite a few roadside problems. Reportedly, there is huge potential for bouldering there. Dan Knights provided the picture below.

Middlebury College

Although there does not appear to be much quantity, a dedicated group of students at Middlebury College has developed a small area about 10 minutes from campus. According to Dan Knights, the classic of the area is an overhanging V8/9 that has a V6/7 direct finish. Check out their web page for photos: http://www.middlebury.edu/~climbing/Pictures/Local. This web page also includes info on an intercollegiate climbing competition circuit that they have started.
